Abstract: A study on the comparison of morpho-anatomical structure and DNA extract of sun and shade leaves of jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) was done. Morphological structure of exposed the Corchorus capsularis are taller, leaves are lighter, thicker, bigger and broader than shaded. Anatomical form of exposed jute have many stomata on the leaf, two layered palisade and compact spongy layer of leaf lamina, compact cells of the mesophyll of midrib, compact parenchyma cells of the cortex of the stem, and larger vacuole in the pith of the stem. While shaded jute has less stomata on the leaf, one layered palisade and loosely arranged cells in the spongy layer of leaf lamina, loosely arranged cells of the mesophyll of midrib, loosely arranged parenchyma cells of the cortex of the stem, and small vacuole in the pith of the stem. In terms of DNA extract, exposed leaves of jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) has more DNA extract than that of the shaded leaves. Thus, morpho-anatomical structure and DNA extract of exposed and shaded jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) differ.

Abstract: This study focus on the determination of bio-organic fertilizer and levels of application that could gave favorable response on the growth and yield of pechay planted in a home garden at Arakan, Cotabato. Bio-organic farming is a key to sustainable agriculture leading to sustainable development. The bio-organic fertilizers used in this study include fermented plant and fruit juice (FPJ and FFJ). Result of the study revealed that FFJ responded significantly better as compared to FPJ on plant height, number of plant leaves and yield in grams per plant. In the case of the levels of application, higher application levels (6tbsp/lit. H2O) excelled on all parameters tested (plant height, number of plant leaves and yield). This implies that higher concentration of FPJ diluted on water will promotes better growth and development of pechay plant emphasizing development of the physical and biological properties of the soil.

Abstract: Spore culture of Nephrolepis falcate (Cav). C. Chr. was undertaken to propagate Nephrolepis falcata in vitro using the spores. Specifically, it aimed to find out the duration of the germination of Nephrolepis falcate spores and observe spore germination and prothallial development. Nephrolepis falcate is a fern plant under family Lomariopsidaceae which is found on shaded areas (Smith et al., 2006). Its rhizome is creeping, frond is simple pinnate, sori round and spores bilateral, monolete. This species was used as ornamental. Thus, there is a need to conduct an in vitro (spore) culture of this plant. In vitro culture of this species revealed a rapid spore germination of 3 days after inoculation. Germ filament formation of one to twelve cells was observed from 3rd to 16th day after inoculation, and prothallial plate formation was noticed 19th day after inoculation. Correspondingly, Nephrolepis falcate (Cav.) C. Chr. spore germination is of Vittaria type and its prothallial development follows Adiantum-type.

Abstract: The study is purely a documentation of the traditional rice farming rituals and practices of the Magindanawn in Southern Philippines. Specifically aims: to identify the farming rituals of the Magindanawn farmers; to descriptively analyzed the rationale behind the practice of rituals in farming; and to determine the factors that made rituals persistence amidst the prevalence of the modern Agriculture. The researchers found that farming rituals are based on Magindanawn beliefs as acts or ways of communicating the soul of uyag-uyag (life sustenance) which is the elder brother of the spirit (soul) of human being as narrated by Tawalang Kalting. The rationale behind farming rituals retention among Magindanawn were based on their highest one belief that “ALLAH” is the most extremely super power. In such the Traditional Magindanawn found out the following belief: a.) Belief in the competence of ALLAH; b.) Palay (Rice), as one of the bounties given by ALLAH, followed the order of nature. c.) According to the Islamic point of view, Angel Michael is one of the Angels of ALLAH who was instructed as in-charge of bounties all over the World; d.) Human beings are enjoined to follow instruction from ALLAH. Farming rituals among Magindanawn farmers are desired for prosperous production. The rituals before rice planting, like calling the name of stars such as balatik, malala, mabu and others, and calling the names of prominent people and different name of angels are not in conformity with Islamic teaching.

Abstract: The study uses randomized complete block design in determining the light regime under 7 year old Eucalyptus deglupta as hedgerows with Zea mays underneath. The result shows that the mean Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR) was highest at 1200 hr. and lowest at 1500 hr. across treatments (Eucalyptus hedgerows) and cropping season. The solar radiation in the 1x3m and 1x9m hedgerow spacing were lowered by 56% and 46%, respectively compared to the sole maize plot across growing period and cropping season. The total mean height and diameter increment of Eucalyptus at the end of the study (two cropping season) were not significantly different. The canopy diameter of Eucalyptus in the wider hedgerow spacing is more spacious than that of the narrow spacing. The grain yield of maize was found higher in sole maize plot than that of the hedgerow treatment. However, the yield is not statistically difference. In agroforestry, light management powers the long-term sustainability and enhances socio-economic profitability of the system. These can be done through appropriate and systematic designs of hedgerows trees that consider the temporal and sequential compatibility of the hedges with the alley crops.

Abstract: The study aimed to determine the potentials of various agro-ecosystem in producing favorable growth and yield of upland rice including biomass production and carbon storage. Results of the study revealed that hinumay and dinorado were performed significantly better in plant height, yield, biomass and carbon content as compared to other varieties. However, in terms of panicle length and number of tillers, it was found out that kawilan variety perform better but it is not significantly different with hinumay and dinorado. With the current findings, hinumay and dinorado were the best upland rice varieties to be cultivated under oil palm, coconut and rubber tree but not to banana agro-ecosystem. On the other side, for early flowering and maturity, it was found out that the 90 days variety significantly bear flower and matured earlier as compared with the other upland rice varieties.
